jokes aside, mitt romney gain soming ground after beating president obama in last week's debate. joining us to talk about the numbers our political editor paul steinhauser. that's pretty stuff. they know how to go there. are we talking about much of a balance here after the debate? >> well, one poll does indicate a small bounce. take a look at this, suzanne. this is from gallop. they do that daily tracking poll. it's a seven-day poll. look what they did. they split it up in two. on the left column, those are the three days prior to last week's debate in denver. you see according to gallop, among registered voters nationwide, the president a five-point advantage. with the sampling area, look at the right. those are october 4th through 6th. the three days after the debate, and gallop indicates it's all tied up there. yeah, i mean, this one poll does indicate that mitt romney did get a bounce. of course, we're going to see a lot more national polls, a lot more polls. most importantly in the battle ground states later today, tomorrow, and wednesday ask thursday. keep your eyes on those state

as they have done in the last week. president obama is a great debater. the way i recall it, brooke, in the last presidential campaign, debates were not president obama's strengths. in fact, he's a much better speechmaker than he is a debater. and don't forget, he hasn't debated an awful lot lately. when the president of the united states and you're in the oval office, people tend not to debate with you an awful lot. you live in the presidential bubble. he hasn't been on stage with other people challenging him. so in a way, he sort of has got to get used to this routine over and over again, where as mitt romney has been on a debate stage an awful lot of times. >> if i recall, you were in a lot of those debates, he's tough, he's no wallflower that mitt romney. what is his biggest challenge, though? going into wednesday? >> the biggest challenge, i think mitt romney has got to do a couple of things. they're at odds with each other. first thing goehe's got to do i take on president obama directly when it comes to policy. what he has to tell the voters is i've got a better plan for an e

, very little from obama, especially at the u.n. this last week. the debates will likely be a different story because this weekend the death toll for americans in the war surpassed the 2000 mark. the soldier who made the helmet cam video suffered only minor wounds and has returned to duty. but it's amazing that he suffered only minor wounds when you see this incredible story. his fight to survive is gripping. take a look. >> fire! hey! i'm moving down! ah! ah! the obama team to say he is flip-flopping, this is something we've seen before, but now the governor, former governor, has about two weeks to sort of massage his message, and you see a real political game going on here. it's a real fight. >> yep. okay. jessica, thank you. appreciate it. >> american airlines now blaming passengers for jamming the lox that cause the seats on three flights to come loose. now, a spokeswoman says the lox, like the one shown here, got stuck after passengers "gunked them up" with spilled coffee and soda. the airline promises it won't happen again. the seats just the latest in a series of troubles for american. the company has also been dealing with labor issues, flight delays, and cancellations. >>> tainted medication in 23 states now being lirnked an outbreak of meningitis. we're going to take a look at what's being done to stop it and how you can protect yourself. ton about once a month. last time i was at a gas station was about...i would say... two months ago. i very rarely put gas in my chevy volt. i go to the gas station such a small amount that i forget how

a commanding performance. most americans believe he trounced president obama in their first showdown. more on that in a moment. first, some of the reactions. even as the dust was settling. >> a week ago, people were saying this was over. we've got a horse race. mitt romney, his performance was head and shoulders above anything we've ever seen him do before. >> mitt romney rose to the moment tonight. in a way, frankly, that surprised me. >> it looked like romney wanted to be there and president obama didn't want to be there. >> dan lothian is in denver. morning, dan. mr. obama can't be feeling very good this morning. >> reporter: good morning. well, look, as you just played out in those sound bites, it was a big night for governor romney. some have suggested it was a make or break debate for him. he certainly showed up to fight. and voters agree he got the win in a cnn or flash poll, 67% of the voters said he won the debate. 25% saying president obama won. how did he do it? he challenged the president, never backed down even as the president appeared not to want to push back until the secon

are excited and especially going into the last five weeks of the campaign. mitt romney needs that big time. >> i'm not sure, dana, how much this plays into everything. but when barack obama is on the campaign stump, some of the things that he uses are very effective with the audience. he gets a lot of feedback from that campaign stump. and when he brought that game into that auditorium last night and started to talk about things like, you know, like ending tax breaks and getting people back to work, it seemed like those things backfired with a very powerful mitt romney standing next to him. let me show you exactly what i mean and i want to ask you about it on the other side. >> part of the way to do is to not give tax breaks to companies that are shipping shops overseas. right now, you can actually take a deduction for moving a plan overseas. i think most americans would say that doesn't make sense and all of that raises revenue. >> you said you debt a deduction for take ago plant overseas? look. i've been in business 25 years. i have no idea what you're talking about. i maybe need to get

away, we're taking a very in depth look all week long at latinos in america, which is a key voting bloc in this election. this is the latest cnn orc poll of latino voters. president obama, the clear favorite over mitt romney, leading 70% to 26%. you can fairly say that's not even close and it is well outside the margin of error and that's critical because you know there is a saying that there is power in numbers. at least 12.2 million people expected to show up at the polls on election day. but that's barely half of latinos who are eligible to vote. and it could come down to location, location, location. the hispanic vote could be the deciding factor in several states, including the swing state of nevada. which is where miguel marquez takes us in the battle to win their vote. >> reporter: it might sound like mexico. but this is the fight for the white house. welcome to washo county, nevada, the front line in this battleground state. washo county's 250,000 voters are expected to decide whether the nevada goes blue or red. and latinos, about 30,000 votes here, could make the critical diff

on the campaign trail for a couple of weeks, heually gave mt romney aop to compassia individuals on the campaign trail suffering because of the obama economy as he said that would do better under his tax plans and by not lit galling he will have a less of a chance of making that point because mitt romney seemed pretty compassionate last night. >> okay. so malpractice you see. john avlon had a jaw dropping moment. let's watch the moment and then we'ltalk. >> well, i don't have a $5 trillion tax cut. i don't have a tax cut of the scale you're talking about. my view is that we ought to provide tax relief to people in the middle class but i won't redees the share of taxes paid by high income people. >> jaw dropping because -- >> i mean, just surreal. the size of the etch-a-sketch. the audacity on taxes. which was unbelievable. i mean, almost as if mitt romney's not listening to the campaign rhetoric for five years. the core difnc candidates is about the tax cuts for the upper income bracket and 20% tax cut across the board. mitt romney never specified the deductions that he discusses and doesn't giv

obama will get snippy. >> well, i don't think, barack obama is a very controlled political type. he knows what to do when the pressure is on. we've seen in the last few weeks. i would say this. i started the whole career at 30 something years plus ago in political debate. i would look for what we call a spring board. and that is to take the things they're talking about all are in the past. if i remember mitt romney, i would move this into the future, the impact of the legislation we've seen and what impact it will have on the future in the next four years versus what he offers in the next four years. i haven't heard enough of that. and if you've seen romney come out quickly with answers, there are one, two, three, enumerated that sounds like real ideas and proposals, she'll appear to be a lot more of a together candidate than we've seen in the past. if he comes out the way he's been generally speaking trying to get obama upset, obama's not going to bite for it. he needs to be really concise, enumerate and one zinger, not a bunch of them. >> thanks so much. >> thank you so much, caro

running on this tax plan, and now five weeks before the election he is saying that his big bold idea is never mind. >> but he also showed flashes of the kind of testiness sources in both camps feared from their candidates, except obama's was directed at the moderator, not romney. >> the last point i would make before -- >> ten minutes is up, sir. >> i think -- i had five seconds before you interrupted me. was -- >> romney did have his own awkward moderator moment. >> i'm sorry, jim. i'm going to stop this subsidy to pbs. i'm going to stop other things, and i like pbs. i love big bird. i actually like you too. >> one of the most surprising parts of the president's performance was what he did not say. no mention of romney's infamous 47% remark, no talk about bain capital, nothing about romney's own taxes. he did play the romney is a hypocrite card when it comes to health care. >> the irony is that we've seen this model work really well in massachusetts because governor romney did a good thing working with democrats in the state to set up what is essentially the identical model and as a
